The only way that humans were even able to consider being “In Christ” was because Jesus died. Jesus death was the door that allowed mankind to find their way back to a relationship with god.
We have to identify or believe that Jesus died and that we also died with him, at least potentially all of mankind died with Jesus on the cross. This of course is a mystery, how could all die with Christ?
When Jesus came, he became the “second Adam” or as a representative for all of humankind. Jesus identified with human flesh when he was born and lived a life of no sin. This I suppose was to show mankind that living without sin was the goal for all of us. In the garden before Adam chose himself over god, he was sinless. All of Adam’s children were cursed with the sin that Adam committed when he chose his own way over what god had given him.
Then Jesus died as “the lamb of god”, fulfilling a covenant that god had made with Abraham that blood and death could transfer the blame of sin to a living animal. This of course didn’t mean just the animal suffered but the person sacrificing the animal had to also identify with the animal in its death. The person also spiritually died with the animal. This was a part of the agreement. Each individual had to understand that god in mercy allowed man to escape judgment by identifying with the dying animal. This in turn led the person to stop that sin to the best of their ability. The release from judgment always depended on the understanding that god was being merciful.
This covenant didn’t work out very well for us . Humankind took advantage of gods mercy and forgot the personal element of personal sacrifice, which was our part.
When Jesus died, god entered into a new covenant with all who were willing to believe. Dying with Jesus meant that we could escape judgment for our obvious separation for god. Now many had to daily die with Christ in order to live for god. Living in Christs death is being “In Christ”.
When Jesus left this world physically, he sent the 3rd part of the Trinity to help believers continue this dying with Christ. Now the spirit reminds Christians that they must apply Jesus blood and remain in Christs death all the time. We have the responsibility to do this as often as we can, preferably all the time but at least daily I think. The ideal is minute by minute identification with our place before a god of mercy.
