My dog and I play a lot! I am always home and she often wants to play. But sometimes she gets a ball and won’t let go of it and when she does that, firmly holding on to the ball while I try to wrestle it away from her, I am unable to really play with her. It is more of a one sided thing, her playing by herself with her ball. She keeps bringing the ball to me but she won’t let go of it almost saying play with me, but how can I play “with her” when it is only her! Holding on to the ball. That’s not playing because play is cooperative. She has to let go of the ball for me to participate in the play. If she ever doesn’t want to let me to be a part of her play then she can just take her ball alone and play alone. Eventually she realizes that she can play alone BUT she knows that we can play TOGETHER. The relationship requires her to LET GO of the ball for me to throw it for her. The RELATIONSHIP is what she REALLY wants, not just hoarding the ball for herself.. She wants to play with ME.
It is really strange but I think God shows me that what my dog and I are doing play is just like my relationship with God.
God invites me to interact but when I want to be alone without him he lets that happen. But I get tired of being alone with myself. I don’t like being alone and it is better to let god be involved in a play relationship. So I LET GO of myself and interact with my soul with God. It seems really hard to let go of the ball, but the alternative is no relationship.
Now I have the problem. My dog sometimes wants to play for a long time! Why doesn’t she just rest sometimes? Fortunately I don’t think we have that problem with god because the Holy Spirit is always available.
